As Engineering Manager you will specialise in designing and building the platform, leading the team to meet planned outcomes and delivery goals. Our ideal candidate is eager to constantly modernise our architecture into the latest and greatest while keeping an eye on the stability of our existing platform.

This is a hybrid people and tech leadership role. We expect you to architect, mentor, and ship.

Your team designs, builds, and scales the platform that powers A2A payments. You’ll own architecture decisions, drive engineering standards, and pair with your team on complex work. You’ll also be one of the engineers most fluent in our AI-augmented development setup, helping the team push the limits of what AI-assisted engineering can do in regulated payments infrastructure.

Our engineers are inclusive and enthusiastic to cooperate with different teams with versatile cultures and across multiple time zones. Tokenites have an aptitude for leadership and are self-motivated to take on the challenging task of keeping up with the ever-growing world of open payments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, architect, and ship cutting-edge payment solutions on our stack (Java, MariaDB, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS) while staying hands-on with code, design, and review.
  • Champion AI-native ways of working. Set the daily standard for AI-assisted development (vibe coding, sub-agents, structured prompting) and identify high-leverage AI capabilities (MCP integrations, vector search and RAG, agentic workflows) that boost productivity across Token.
  • Own the full development lifecycle for complex, real-time financial systems: clear architecture, code review discipline, strong test coverage, observability, performance, security, and incident readiness. Set the bar and hold the team to it.
  • Collaborate with product and leadership to translate business needs into technical solutions that shape the future of payments.
  • Mentor and grow your team. Coach senior contributors into leaders, raise the floor for the whole team, and build a collaborative, high-performing culture where engineering excellence and AI fluency reinforce each other.
  • Balance constant modernisation with stability: keep moving the architecture forward without compromising the reliability of the platform in production.
  • Work closely with senior engineers and FinTech giants to continuously improve their platform and develop new, customer-centric features.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • At least 8-10 years of total engineering experience, including a minimum of 3+ years in engineering management, ideally transitioning from Senior or Principal Engineer roles.
  • Proven ability to lead and grow teams of up to 10+ engineers, with experience hiring senior talent, growing leaders from within, supporting struggling team members, and fostering a positive team culture.
  • Experience managing at least two agile teams in a fast-paced, dynamic, and culture-dependent environment.
  • Strong expertise across our tech stack: Java, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Kafka, and gRPC. You’ll spend significant time in code: pairing with engineers, contributing to non-trivial work, leading critical reviews, and prototyping.
  • Hands-on experience with modern AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent) on real production work. You’ve set up sub-agents and repository context files and have a clear point of view on what AI-assisted development changes about how teams operate.
  • Track record of driving engineering best practices: code review standards, test coverage targets, CI/CD discipline, observability, and incident management.
  • Experience working closely with Product and other stakeholders to develop new features and drive technical innovation.
  • Culture and mindset are more important than industry background, though FinTech experience is a plus.
  • Role is based in Berlin with a hybrid work model; candidates should be available to work onsite at least once or twice a week.

Open to all

Token.io is building an open future for everyone. We don’t just accept different points of view, lived experiences and new ways of thinking — we search them out. They help us make better products, better decisions, and a better place for everyone to work. So, come as you are. We acknowledge and embrace different backgrounds, identities and abilities. Respect is our default, and empathy is our baseline. No one succeeds until we all do.
