Head of Platform Engineering

Are you looking to impact and be part of something special, such as shaping the future of healthcare? Do you love solving complex problems and want your work to make a difference?

Sound like you? Keep reading.

At Semble, we are on a mission to enable health professionals to amplify their impact. We improve the way healthcare is delivered to millions of people by providing doctors and their teams with powerful, innovative, intuitive, and secure software. Our cloud-based clinical system is already used by thousands of clinicians, making their lives easier and saving them money, while structuring their health data to help research.

We are a passionate and driven team, proud to unite under strong cultural drivers:

  • Impact - We do work that matters.
  • Collaboration – We are in it together.
  • Human touch – We care deeply.

We are also quick to embrace new technologies: we have rapidly adopted AI internally, and we are always looking to work with people who are excited to augment their work with AI.

This role can be fully remote in the UK and France (with occasional travel to our London or Paris offices).

What you will be doing

We are hiring a Head of Platform / SRE / Infrastructure / DevOps to define and execute our multi‑year platform strategy, ensuring reliability, scalability, security, and developer velocity for Semble’s cloud products. You will own the vision and roadmap for our platform foundations (cloud, Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability, configuration management, cost, and compliance), lead a high‑impact team, and partner closely with Revenue, Data, Quality, Product and Engineering to enable rapid, safe delivery.

Reporting into our Vice President of Technology, you’ll shape this domain end‑to‑end — setting standards, building an empowered team, and delivering measurable outcomes across reliability (SLOs/SLA), security and compliance, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and time‑to‑restore.

This is a hands‑on leadership role: you will set strategy, coach and scale the team, and lead from the front on priority initiatives such as developer experience (e.g. ephemeral environment, re‑platforming CI/CD), zero‑downtime rollouts, and large‑scale platform improvements.

In this role, your responsibilities will span across:

Lead the Platform and SRE function

  • Set and communicate a clear vision, strategy, and action plan for Platform/SRE aligned to business goals; define multi‑year cloud architecture north star across infrastructure, and reliability.
  • Build, mentor, and manage a high‑performing team (SRE, Platform, DevOps, Infra), establishing strong stakeholder management and influence across Engineering, Data, Compliance, Security, and Product.
  • Define and enforce operational excellence standards (SLOs, incident management, on‑call, change management, RCAs) and nurture a culture of reliability and continuous improvement.

Own reliability, scalability, and performance

  • Establish and manage SLOs, error budgets, capacity planning, performance testing, and resilience engineering practices.
  • Lead initiatives for zero‑downtime deployments, progressive delivery, fast rollback strategies, and disaster recovery.
  • Drive observability (metrics, logs, traces), incident response, and post‑incident learning loops.

Modernise delivery and developer experience

  • Re‑platform and standardise CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions, Argo CD) to accelerate safe delivery, reduce lead time, and improve change success rate.
  • Champion a developer‑first experience: build golden paths, templates, and paved‑road tooling for services, infra, and data workloads.
  • Implement configuration management at scale for repeatability and compliance (e.g., Ansible, Chef; Terraform/IaC).

Cloud, cost, security, and compliance

  • Lead large cloud migrations and platform transitions (e.g., to AWS and from AWS to private cloud or on‑prem data center) with clear cutover strategies and risk controls.
  • Own multi‑account/multi‑cluster strategy, networking, security baselines, identity, secrets, and data protection in partnership with Security and Compliance.
  • Optimise cloud footprint: set budgets/alerts, drive efficiency, and ensure predictable cost per workload.

Cross‑functional leadership

  • Translate business objectives into a sequenced platform roadmap with clear outcomes and KPIs (DORA, SLOs, cost per tenant/workload); gain alignment with Product, Engineering, Security, and Data.
  • Establish crisp engagement models with Product/Engineering, with Security/Compliance, with Data/Analytics.
  • Create working agreements and SLAs with product teams for on‑call, incident command, and escalation; activate post‑incident reviews focused on systemic fixes.
  • Communicate trade‑offs with clarity to technical and non‑technical stakeholders; influence decision‑making across domains and geographies (France and the UK).

What you’ll get in return

  • The great feeling coming with knowing you do something that matters: shaping the future of healthcare!
  • Autonomy and ownership – we’ll set the vision and share the context, then we trust you to run with things – that’s the reason we hire you!
  • 36 days off: 25 holidays +bank holidays +3 extra days (birthday and ‘feel good’ days) - that we will expect you to actually take so you can recharge and rest.
  • Company Equity - We appreciate and recognise all of our employees’ contributions, so everyone is eligible for Semble share options!
  • Comprehensive health & wellbeing support – including private health insurance, and mental health support and free therapy sessions through Oliva.
  • Hybrid & flexible work environment – work from anywhere in the UK, with also some flexibility to work across Europe. You decide how much or how little you go to the office.
  • Get the tech you need - You will get the latest MacBook and take your pick across a wide range of equipment to set up your home office ergonomically.
  • Work alongside an inspiring team – our two founders have started Semble after a successful startup exit, and your future colleagues are all knowledgeable and innovators in their field.
  • Fantastic office space in Central London, right outside Monument - with a roof terrace, weekly animations, loads of natural light, and cute doggies!
  • The usual free bits coming with nice offices (barista coffee, tea, fruits, happy hours and activities...).

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and all walks of life, including any typically underrepresented groups in the technology industry. We also encourage applications from disabled and neurodiverse candidates, so if there are any adjustments we can make to support you throughout the recruitment process, please do let us know.
