At Orbex we are looking for AIT Leader to oversee assembly, integration and test activities of our liquid propulsion systems.
You will work closely with our in-house team of propulsion engineers, project management, quality and manufacturing to develop state-of-the-art engines and be part of Orbex’ effort to our first launch.

The Position
Key responsibilities of the role:
Team Management
- Manage people and the delivery of propulsion hardware (HW) within the time and budget and at the required quality level. This includes mechanical assembly (precision work and cleanroom work), welding, assembly cleaning, management of LOX levels, inspection (dimensional, cleanliness, spring testing, etc), testing (leak tests, integration work at test sites).
- Plan, manage, and allocate tasks and daily responsibilities to the team and ensure accurate coverage to maintain and meet business deadlines within budget and with the agreed quality (Production and delivery plan, pipeline management, backlog management, quality, time management etc).
- Distribution of mechanical and small electrical integration and technical inspection activities as well as providing the required level of support to technicians during the assembly, integration, inspection and testing phases.
- Troubleshooting and lead issue resolution as and when needed at different phases of the project, supporting manufacturing and test teams.
- Hands-on approach, supporting the team in executing their daily tasks if required, involving cleaning to inspection, through to assembly, integration tests, equipment maintenance and documentation.
- Training your team to own, maintain, and control assembly and integration documentation.
- Instil the required discipline, HSE precautions and cleanliness in all of the workshop areas, that are required when working in a potentially harmful environment.
- Ensure that the team has the required and properly maintained/calibrated equipment, tools, environments to complete their tasks.
Assembly, Integration, Inspection and Test:
- Implement Standard operating procedures, processes and safety standards, ensuring safe and proper working practices in the AIT cleanroom, cleaning areas, workshop, welding and other relevant areas
- You will be working closely with the Designers, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers and the Test team. Ensuring proper collaboration and handover of tasks for the projects that come through.
- Support Design in design for assembly (DfA) reviews to optimise design for efficient, cost-effective, and high-reliability AIT results. Work within the relevant teams to produce necessary documentation, including review and approving for official release.
- Support QA by ensuring diligent technical inspections of delivered HW from Non-conformances to resolution and prevention
- Align with System Functions on Development & Engineering and Assembly, Integration and Test topics
- Collaborate with the Supply Chain Management to ensure accurate and timely ordering and availability of parts and to improve the performance of the suppliers
- Enhance quality system compliance through process improvements and cross-functional collaboration, resulting in zero quality-related issues in engine assembly, integration and testing.
- Collaborate with Quality and Engineering teams, to implement and develop technical documentation and best practices
- Responsible for the production and recruitment plans to make sure the team is optimally staffed.
- Manage workforce performance: offer motivation, training, and technical guidance, and ensure they are sufficiently skilled to meet their deliverables.
- Provide training and guidance to team as well as optimising workflows, resolving technical issues and ensuring availability of consumables.
- Establish development plans for the team, its members and organisation to answer to the future needs of the company.
Must Have:
- Bachelors or master’s degree in Space, Aerospace or Mechanical disciplines, or other relevant engineering background.
- Proven min of 5 yrs of working in AIT preferably with space propulsion systems.
- You will be a hands-on leader with experience of leading others and managing team schedules and outputs.
- Proven experience in the development and production of (aerospace) mechanical components, preferably delicate mechanical assemblies.
- Proven track record of providing quality and the ability to work closely with quality departments.
- Proven track record of working in a strict HSE environment, demonstrating and instilling discipline on the team members on this topic.
- Experience in defining, writing and following technical documentation (SOP, processes, requirements specifications, P&I Diagrams, ICD, etc.) and test procedures.
- Experience working with cleaning and working with oxygen systems, applicable in a cleanroom environment (ISO 8 minimum).
- Knowledge and understanding of mechanical and fluidic system and pressurised systems is preferable.
- Experience working in an ISO9001 environment and to a QMS is preferred.
- Familiarity with aerospace cleanliness standards, pressure systems safety protocols, and leak detection techniques is preferable.
