Newton’s Tree is searching for a highly skilled Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) to join our early stage startup with proven product market fit and exceptional growth prospects. Your role is the critical link between our internal engineering team and the hospital frontline. Working in close partnership with our Site Reliability Engineers (SREs), and reporting into our VP FDE, you will work on the technical rollout of the Newton’s Tree platform at hospital sites. While the SRE team focuses on the core platform stability, you will own the site-specific implementation - navigating complex local networks, architecting integration paths, and ensuring our AI platform is leveraged successfully in a diverse range of hospital environments.

Typical responsibilities and duties

• On-site Implementation: Work directly with hospital IT teams and our SRE team to configure our platform, ensuring integration with live clinical systems.
• Vendor integration: Work with a broad range of third party AI vendors and integrate their products into our platform.
• Technical Problem Solving: Act as a creative troubleshooter to overcome site-specific infrastructure hurdles. You will be working with JSON, YAML, Python and SQL at a minimum to build the "glue" that integrates our platform with diverse clinical systems. You will speak HL7v2, FHIR, and DICOM.
• Client Collaboration: Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clinical and IT stakeholders, translating complex technical requirements into actionable deployment plans.
• Internal Collaboration: Work closely with our internal development teams to feed back site-specific priorities and insights, ensuring our core product evolves to meet the practical realities of the clinical frontline.
• Data Integration: Build and refine workflows and data pipelines to ensure the platform’s reliability and accuracy, troubleshooting data flow issues and ensuring timely resolution for our users.
• Supporting scientific evaluation: Work with the Clinical Data Science team to enable head to head evaluations to support sites in selecting the best performing AI for their needs.
• Documentation: Along with your SRE colleagues, create and maintain clear, site-specific technical documentation, architecture and integration diagrams, and deployment playbooks to ensure long-term stability at partner sites.

Qualifications and skills

• Education/experience: A BSc or MA in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience is essential. You must have a proven track record of solving complex technical problems in a high-stakes environment.
• Tech stack: Deep understanding of Linux environments and working with modern development stacks including containers and kubernetes (and willing to learn). Proficient in JSON and YAML for configuration, with the ability to write Python scripts and SQL queries to manipulate and move data.
• Data & Healthcare Interoperability: Prior experience with healthcare data standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR is required. Training is available to boost existing knowledge.
• Creative Mindset: You are a "builder" who can look at a non-standard technical environment and find a creative, robust path to deployment. You thrive in whiteboarding architectural diagrams, crafting slide decks to convince stakeholders, and can happily switch to writing code, automating, and fixing clusters.
• Information governance: Genuine interest and appetite in understanding and applying best practices around information governance including GDPR (UK/EU), Common Law Duty of Confidentiality (UK) and HIPAA (USA). Experience working with security best practices, including encryption and authorisation mechanisms (TLS, OAuth 2.0, VPN).
• Agile/ways of working: Demonstrated skills in managing client expectations, cross-functional planning, and rapid, iterative deployment.

Compensation & benefits

• £70-90k per annum, depending on experience and skills
• Hybrid working (in the UK), with monthly team working in London, and travel to sites as needed

• Technical depth: Focused on hands-on problem solving, integration architecture, data manipulation (Python/SQL), and your ability to navigate complex technical stacks.
• Client & Product: Focused on your ability to work with stakeholders, creative approach to "last mile" deployment challenges, and understanding of the healthcare technology sector.
• Culture and leadership: Focused on expectations of the role, personal qualities, handling difficult on-site situations, and how you represent Newton’s Tree to our partners.
