Robotics Software Engineer
Software Engineering
Overview of the Role:
We are looking for an experienced software & robotics engineer to join our team and help push our strawberry-picking robots to the next level of capability. Having started delivering orders of our robots to customers, we’re now focused on improving usability and performance, as well as building new functionality to support new applications. We’re a small team with big ambitions and, as a recently-funded start-up, we are able to offer share options as part of remuneration packages, allowing employees to benefit from company success.
The successful applicant will be evidence and experimentally driven, comfortable drawing on multiple sources of data — logs, user feedback, observation and experiments — to evaluate ideas and identify the root cause of bugs before committing time to fixing them. You’ll be a strong team player who works closely with our Product Owner and Head of Platform, and you’ll be equally at home writing code and testing it on the machines themselves.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Develop our machines’ capabilities to the next level, across usability, speed, accuracy and calibration.
- Investigate a range of data sources — logs, user feedback, observation and experiments — to identify and deliver improvements to the machine, and to diagnose the root cause of bugs before fixing them.
- Test your own software directly on our machines, working hands-on with hardware.
- Work closely with our Product Owner and Head of Platform to prioritise and deliver improvements.
- Collaborate across the engineering team to ensure changes are robust, well-tested and fit for a production environment.
Desirable Characteristics:
- 5–10 years’ software engineering experience; C# preferred, otherwise one or more languages in the C family; some Python experience is a plus.
- Experience with robotics is a must (but ROS experience is not required).
- Comfortable working with hardware and testing your own software on physical machines.
- Evidence and experimentally driven approach to problem solving — able to collate evidence from multiple sources before committing to a fix.
- Strong team player, able to work closely with product and platform stakeholders.
Key Relationships:
- Report to the CTO / Head of Platform.
- Work closely with our Product Owner to prioritise and shape improvements.
- Work with our engineering and manufacturing teams to test and deploy changes on live machines.
