Head of Operations

We’re looking for a Head of Operations to help us continue to drive operational excellence, scalability, and efficiency across the organisation.

Who are we?

Common sense says that the less someone drives, the less driving should cost them. And we agree. But back in 2018, the car insurance industry didn’t see it like that. So, we launched the UK’s first real-time pay-by-mile policies. Since then, we’ve had our members covered for a massive 500 million miles of driving. It’s been an epic journey (which is a bit ironic, since we’re helping people who don’t use their cars so much).

Along the way, we’ve gone from plucky newcomers, to being voted Best Car Insurance Provider 3 times in a row. Though we’re still very much doing things in our own, unique way - we’re now backed by Direct Line Group (alongside some of the country's best known brands)

Head of Operations

As our Head of Operations, you’ll play a crucial role in driving operational excellence, scalability, and efficiency across the organisation. Reporting directly to our Chief Operating Officer (COO), you’ll be a visionary leader with a strong background in operations and the ability to navigate the complexities of a scale-up environment within a larger corporate structure.

You’ll lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing operations team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning through setting clear performance goals, providing regular feedback, and conducting performance evaluations.

You’ll support cross-functional collaboration, conducting regular cross-functional meetings with key stakeholders within both By Miles and the wider group to ensure effective cross-functional collaboration.

As a key member of the Senior Management Team at By Miles, you understand the importance of building and maintaining a great company culture and are committed to engaging in collaborative activities that develop and support the company's commitment to building an inclusive workplace.

You’ll be a fantastic addition to By Miles if you have:

  • Demonstrable Operations leadership in developing and executing successful operational strategies, preferably with a focus on the insurtech or fintech industry (but not required).

  • A proven track record of leading and scaling operations in a high-growth environment.

  • Strong leadership and team development skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels of the organisation.

  • The ability to coach team members to enable positive change and continuous improvement.

  • A strong understanding of revenue drivers, opportunity cost, timing, and how different projects impact the success of the business.

  • The ability to explain challenges, opportunities and new developments in a way that everyone can understand.

  • Excellent organisation skills, setting the benchmark in managing a broad workload across multiple areas of expertise.

  • The ability to navigate the complexities of a scale-up environment within a larger corporate structure.

  • Working knowledge of process improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Agile.

  • A strong understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance in the insurance industry.

Day to day you’ll be:

  • Overseeing the operational running of the business: Asset management, claims management, CX operations, FNOL provision, insurance ops, goal setting, health & safety, logistics, office space, software, supplier relationships, stock management, telematics, validations processes, and legal ops.

  • Delivering efficient and aligned ways of working. Enabling the continuous improvement of company and team working methods and processes, to ensure they scale as we grow.

  • Developing and implementing operational strategies that align with the company's growth objectives and integration goals.

  • Identifying and addressing operational bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement.

  • Working closely with the COO and other senior leaders to align operational strategies with overall business objectives.

  • Ensuring compliance with industry regulations, company policies, and quality standards.

  • Developing and implementing risk management strategies to mitigate operational risks and ensure business continuity.

  • Utilising data analytics and performance metrics to drive informed decision-making and measure operational effectiveness.

  • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics.

  • Supporting the COO to lead the operational integration of By Miles into Direct Line Group, ensuring a smooth transition and alignment of processes.

  • Managing change effectively, ensuring all team members are informed, engaged, and equipped to navigate organisational changes.

Salary: £70,000- £80,000 + flexible benefits

Location: Work from anywhere in the UK, with full access to our offices in London (near London Bridge), Leeds, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Doncaster, Perth, Maidstone, Gloucester, Farnham and Peterborough.
