Our company is respectful, fun-loving and (most importantly) passionate about pets and their wellbeing. Throughout our business you'll meet people who think differently, aim for impact, and love to try new things. Want to join our pack? Join us. Love every moment. Love ManyPets.

A day in the life

As Head of Reserving, you will own the delivery of loss reserving for ManyPets across all our UK products and the run-off of our Swedish book. As part of our multi-functional team, you will support the growth and development of our Pet insurance books, monitor our performance, and take our analytics function to the next level. You will be working closely with the Pricing, Product Development and Claims teams to support commercial and loss ratio targets. You’ll also be closely aligned with Data Science, Technology and Marketing in our ever-evolving business.

This is an Actuarial Reserving role that truly immerses into the business. There is significant opportunity to engage with all aspects of the business and to develop technical skills in data science, pricing, and product development. The actuarial team at ManyPets is small (but very functional!), and you will manage one other actuarial analyst.

Your responsibilities

  • Own the actuarial reserving process for ManyPets UK and the Swedish run-off account, ensuring quality and accuracy in reserving output.
    • Lead quarterly deep dives into methodology, assumptions, and development patterns.
    • Produce monthly summaries of ongoing loss ratio performance, tracking against quarterly results.
    • Communicate results effectively and on a regular basis to senior leadership and external partners (auditors, carriers) as required.
    • Work in partnership with the whole business to realise business gains from your valuable reserving insight.
    • Recognise and act on trends seen during reserving exercises, collaborating with different teams around the business as required.
    • Work with the Finance team to deliver reserving information for our Board, annual reports, investor packs and monthly Finance meetings.
  • Deliver technical enhancement to our reserving processes and continue to evolve the accuracy of the reserving.
  • Ensure excellent relationships with key external stakeholders for the wider actuarial and underwriting team. Build close and trusted relationships with other key partners outside the business.

Compliance and Regulatory

  • Ensure appropriate actuarial governance and risk controls are in place.
    • Maintain a strong reserving framework and ensure process documentation is kept up to date and relevant.
    • Manage and contribute to any auditor and carrier reviews related to reserving. Ensuring all supplier (external and internal) agreed actions, tracking them to completion.
    • Ensure appropriate provisions are in place that ensure the integrity of compliance, in line with UK or Swedish regulatory requirements.

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and guidance that encourages both personal commitment and a high-performing team culture.
  • Help your team to deliver actionable insight across the business, helping us react to ever-changing market conditions.
  • Set individual objectives for your team - carrying out regular performance reviews to manage implement personal development plans.
  • Work with your team to provide regular informative updates to the team which maintain business awareness, performance, and morale.
  • Lead by example and role model our company values - inspiring others to do the same.

Your skills and experience

  • You are a talented reserving specialist with a background in personal lines insurance. Mixed reserving/pricing experience is an advantage.
  • You bring a deep understanding of the key actuarial principles behind loss reserving – and you’re able to apply a commercial mindset to your principles with a consumer concept.
  • You are up to date with technical developments in the industry and have a good sense of best practice and knowledge of suitable actuarial standards.
  • You are detail focused, analytical and able to communicate outputs clearly and simply.
  • You are confident in delivering reserve reviews and reviewing the quality of other analysts work.
  • You can create report analysis and build presentation for senior management and non-technical audiences.
  • You have experience in one or more coding languages such as SQL, SAS, R or Python, plus advanced Excel skills, and actuarial tools such as ResQ or open-source reserving techniques.
  • You are confident in building resilient stakeholder relationships through a partnered approach.
  • You have detailed understanding of the dynamics of personal lines insurance, with pet insurance experience an advantage but not essential.

The interview process

This position has a three-step interview process, which will be held via Zoom. We may need you to sign an NDA as part of the process for this role and we may also ask you to complete a Wisnio online profile, which will enable us to ask you some specific questions about your values and working style.

  • Stage 1 – you'll have an informal '45 meeting with one of the People team. We'll share more about the role and ask you about your experience to bring your CV to life.
  • Stage 2 - you’ll meet our Chief Underwriting Officer. This will be a longer interview of up to an hour and a half and we’ll tell you more about the company and role and we’ll ask you both technical and competency questions.
  • Stage 3 – we’ll share a presentation task with you to present back at the final round. You’ll meet our CUO again and we’ll include another senior team member. We expect this meeting to last for at most an hour.

Ways of working

On a typical day you’ll be working from a laptop with a screen, mouse, keyboard, and headset. You’ll be meeting your colleagues on Zoom and keeping in touch regularly via email and Slack too – we’d expect you to be using your computer for around seven hours a day. We’d ask that you have a distraction-free work area and a reliable internet connection with a speed of 25Mbps so you can work effectively. We’ll make sure you have the right home set-up that supports you in the role by providing best-in-class technology, money towards a desk, and vision support.
