About the project assignment

ICIS invests into transforming chemical intelligence. The focus of this project is to further build out ICIS data foundation which unlocks deeper analytics and customer workflow innovation. You will contribute to the enhancement and automation of foundational data sets. This will involve primarily to create automated models that produce granular, dynamic global demand forecast data to help the industry plan operations and strategic investments, as well as highly responsive supply and cost predictions.

This role is project based and initially for one year.

Job Purpose:

As Senior Data Scientist at ICIS, you will drive data-based innovation by developing analytical models that quantify impacts to some of the largest industries in the world - energy and chemicals with global supply networks. The foundational data output from your work, such as granular global demand and supply data, will accelerate AI and customer workflow innovation. You will join our existing team of experienced Data Scientists and work closely alongside ICIS market experts around the globe. Our models enable the analysis of prices and market fundamentals to support decision making in trading and operations. You will be part of an international team, which requires occasional travel globally. As of day one, you will take responsibility in demanding analytics innovation projects - your primary focus will be to design a model augmented process which can determine current fair representative market price levels across a wide range of markets.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Drive and support R&D and operation of data-driven analytical market models for foundational data sets: Together with our analysts and market experts, you will co-develop strong quantitative market models to predict key market variables drawing from a wide variety of techniques; guide and support others in the development of models, implement new models as well as model enhancements, such as driving cloud-based model and process automation
  • Engage with our customer development partners and internal market experts to explain our models and insights and to discuss the market structure and key drivers - translating gained domain knowledge back into our models and building a deep understanding of operations and decision making in our markets
  • Take own project management responsibility on model developments and work with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Expand your knowledge, by learning new techniques and applying them to existing and new analytical problems in our markets. Actively share knowledge and innovation areas with your peers

Key Skills/Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in predictive modelling, preferably in the context of markets and market prices – a good holistic overview of available modelling techniques and existing experience in at least one of the following fields: assumption-based scenario forecasting & simulation, agent-based modelling, statistics & econometrics, mathematical optimization, time series prediction with machine learning
  • Experience organising projects and teams in a self-driven way and aligning teams, tasks and expectations; habit of starting simple – using proof of concepts to test hypotheses and iterating to add value; track record advancing development projects into production
  • Holistic perspective on business value from analytics and a strong ability to explain complex topics to diverse stakeholders at the appropriate level, strong communication and engagement
  • Advanced programming skills (we use Python) and SQL, native with AI, and able to create and review efficient code and data queries
  • Basics of software development (modularisation, versioning e.g. with git, unit testing, best practice coding standards, DevOps & MLOps)

Primary Location Base Pay Range: Germany - Karlsruhe €71,600 - €119,400.
