About the role

The Lead Engineer at Apheris is responsible for leading a team of very experienced, motivated and proactive engineers for building and delivering our Federated Machine Learning and Analytics Platform. We’re seeking candidates with experience of high-growth fast-paced environments and who have a track record of leading best-in-class teams that develop technical data products. In addition to managing the team, this role is hands-on and requires excellent technical leadership abilities. You should be a problem solver and execute on opportunities quickly. You will work closely with other specialists across the organization, so excellent communication skills and a collaborative mentality are crucial. We empower you to be a major contributor to the success of our product and thereby strongly influence how organizations securely collaborate on data science and AI across boundaries.

What you will do
  • Lead a high-performing, cross-functional team of engineers including backend, frontend, DevOps/cloud, QA, and data engineering, as well as data scientists.
  • Be a hands-on engineering contributor – in addition to managing the team, write your own code, review code of your team members, coach them on coding best practices
  • Help define the design and architecture of major software components, systems, and features. Derive technical requirements and help manage technical debt in a high-growth environment.
  • Manage the team’s backlog and advocate for technical initiatives in line with our technical roadmap. Manage team deliverables through agile methodologies and propose enhancements to improve workflows and elevate efficiency and delivery excellence.
  • Take a leadership role in multiple simultaneous high-impact projects, including facilitating design discussions, breaking down plans into work items, and mentor team members
  • Provide a consistent and successful interface between engineering and product management. Communicate clearly in verbal and written forms, from peer training to design documents.
  • Architect, build, and maintain tools for a self-service infrastructure that improves developer efficiency and code reliability.
  • Work with a team dedicated to improving the business every day. Jump in and mediate bottlenecks hands-on – including leading decision-making about technical architecture, implementing software solutions, code reviews, etc.
You should apply if
  • Expert coding skills in multiple programming languages, especially Golang and Python and previous hands-on experience with AWS or other cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, Azure) and development of internal, and external APIs.
  • A demonstrated track-record of managing best-in-class cross-functional teams
  • Passionate about security and privacy and a to have a record of collaboration with those teams to build software with those by default
  • Multiple years of hands-on development experience – you are a software engineer and can lead technical discussions on every level across stakeholders, and still write your own code.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with product and engineering leadership to translate product objectives to delivery and ensure priorities and expectations are both aligned and are realistic.
  • A strong grasp of programming’s best-practices (e.g., code clarity, documentation, git workflows) and experience with cloud infrastructure and cloud-native application development, including Docker containers, preferably on AWS.
  • A passion for relentlessly striving to push toward best practices and team goals while being flexible in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Great leadership skills with demonstrated experience of taking on a lead role in a team of engineers and data scientists, preferably in an agile Scrum setting. You should be able to confidently take ownership of a problem, gather ideas to solve it, and convey your approach efficiently.
  • Based in a European time zone.
Bonus points if
  • You have experience in developing enterprise-grade software for large B2B data products and a solid understanding of infrastructure security (https, SSH, 2FA, etc.) and modern networking for private cloud and public Internet services
  • You have expert skills with AWS services and cloud-native application development on AWS – including AWS services such as EC2, VPC, Step Functions, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, container services, such as ECR, ECS, EKS, as well as infrastructure as code via Terraform, CloudFormation and CDK.
  • You have experience with Python data analysis frameworks (e.g., Pandas, Numpy) and machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Tensorflow, scikit-learn).
  • You have experience building distributed or federated systems.
If you don’t match 100% of the requirements but think you're a good fit for the role, we encourage you to apply anyway. We care about finding people with the right values, motivation and potential to grow, and will work with you to adapt the role if it’s the right fit.
What we offer you
  • Industry-competitive compensation
  • Early-stage equity
  • Remote-first working – work where you work best, whether from home or a co-working space near you
  • The right hardware to make you efficient – be it a laptop with Linux, Windows or a MacBook
  • Great suite of benefits including a wellbeing budget, mental health benefits, a work from home budget, a co-working stipend and a learning and development budget
  • Regular team lunches and social events
  • Generous holiday allowance (location-dependent)
  • Quarterly All Hands meet-up at our Berlin HQ
  • A fun and diverse team of mission-driven individuals with a drive to see AI and ML used for good
  • Plenty of room to grow personally and professionally and shape your own role
Here’s a bit more about our culture and ambitions at Apheris!
About Apheris
Finding solutions to the planet’s most urgent problems requires organizations to collaborate. But the data and insights needed to solve these challenges are locked away in businesses, unable to be centralized or directly shared for collaboration with customers and partners.
Apheris is pioneering a new way for organizations to securely collaborate on even the most sensitive data across organizational and geographical boundaries. By unlocking value from sensitive data, Apheris is accelerating discovery and innovation, driving operational efficiency, and reducing risk and carbon impact for our customers and their partners.
Apheris was founded in 2019 after our co-founders built data applications that couldn't be used as data was distributed across departments and couldn’t be shared or centralized as a result of regulation. From this they got thinking: what if the data didn’t have to move and instead the computation was sent to the data? Fast-forward to today, Apheris is a platform that empowers businesses to run advanced analytics and machine learning models across organizational and geographical borders in a way that’s secure, private, and governed. By powering their data infrastructure with federated ML and analytics, they are able to build and operationalize data applications in ways previously not possible.
At Apheris, we’re unified by our mission and the positive impact we can have. We’re excited by the potential we can bring with our federated approach and are looking for the next addition to our marketing team to join us in realizing our mission.
